What are the pros and cons of online counselling?

Convenience: Without leaving the comfort of your home, you can send me messages at any time and write to me as often as you like. I will read everything you send me.

Accessibility: There are no long waits. I will respond to you within 24-48 hours.

Anonymity: Some people feel comfortable with the relative anonymity of cyberspace.

Writing is therapeutic: Online psychotherapy is ideal for people who keep diaries or write about their feelings. Writing is cathartic and serves as a catalyst for reflection, self-exploration, and insight into oneself and one’s difficulties.

Saved records: Since therapy consists of a series of email exchanges, both the client and threapist have permanent records of their “sessions”. These give both parties an opportunity to review and evaluate their work together.

Cost: Email counselling invariably costs less. The client has time to think about and formulate questions, comments and answers for the therapist.
